Dr. Evans Harrell is a clinical psychologist with many years of experience treating individuals of all ages, couples and families. He currently sees adults, adolescents and couples. Although his original training was psychodynamic, now his approach is quite flexible and eclectic.
When patients come to him, he is not so concerned about finding a diagnostic label for them as he is about helping them find a way to enjoy their lives and their relationships and to be productive in a way that they find satisfying. He looks for an approach to treatment that fits the patient’s problem and situation, and that approach may be insight-oriented, cognitive behavioral, using hypnosis or simply supportive, as we explore these issues together, at a pace the patient is comfortable with, the patient’s goals and concerns.
Dr. Harrell was in private practice for many years in Rocky Mount, having gone there as the Coordinator of Children’s Services, where he supervised five children’s programs employing thirty-five clinical staff. Dr. Harrell earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of the South (Sewanee), where he was elected to Phi Bata Kappa. During his junior year he attended the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France, and had the opportunity to travel widely in Europe and the Mediterranean, an experience that greatly broadened his outlook and perceptions of the world, and let to extensive travel later. He earned his Masters degree in psychology and his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida. His internship was at Topeka State Hospital in Kansas. He was awarded the Diplomate in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology in 1984.
